"Britannia" is a topsail gaffer sold by Bassett Lowke during the 1930's. New she cost the not insignificant sum of £4 pounds 10 shillings.
In the 1930 catalogue BL described her as follows "These yachts being built with similar lines to Shamrock, Britannia and Meteor are well adapted for racing. They are cutter rigged, with best stripped sail cloth, best fittings, and are supplied with running rudders. Hull of selected wood, well finished and painted black and Indian red, with gold lines. A handsome and thoroughly up to date design which will be found to possess sound sailing qualities".
The hull is as good as you would expect from BL with a wonderful "wineglass" shape.
This particular yacht has her original paint scheme. She has been sailed so as you would expect on a yacht of this age there is some paintloss in places.
The deck has a wonderful colour with plank lines. All the deck fittings are original.
Remarkably the rig is original. There is a foresail, a gaff mailsail and topsail although they are heavily stained. There are a couple of small holes and the head of the main has been repaired. All the spars and bowsies are original. The rigging has been renewed over the years.
It is very exciting to find a yacht which has just "stepped out" from a catalogue of the heyday of pond yachts. Especially when the catalogue is from the iconic Bassett Lowke company.
The stand is pine and it is included in the sale if required.
