Ailsa yachts were made by the Turner family in Largs, Scotland for many years both before and after the Second World War. They also made yachts for other companies such as Clyde Model Dockyard in the thirties and after the war for Milbro.
However, this particular yacht is very rare. She has an ivorine deck badge marked "British made Iona Yacht Guaranteed ". Although it is obvious from the hull shape that this yacht was made by Ailsa it is unclear whether Iona were a different company or if Iona was a range of yachts sold by Ailsa or perhaps Clyde Model Dockyard.
The hull paintwork is original green with a gold coachline and ochre below the waterline. The keel is painted matching green.
This yacht has been sailed so there is some paint loss on the bottom of the keel, on the bow, and there are some marks and scratches on the hull. All of which suggest that she has been sailed quite a lot although overall the paintwork is good for her age. The name "Mayflower" has been marked on the bows.
The rig is totally original. The spars, hooks and bowsies are all in good order and original. The sails are in very good condition considering she has been sailed. There are no holes or tears and just a few stains. They have a lovely blue stripe which is indicative of the 1930's.
The deck is in good order with all original fittings. The varnish is original but there are a few marks.
The stand is mahogany but is homemade and not as old as the yacht. It is included in the sale if required.
Ailsas are very pretty and are now very collectable. A rare example such as this would be a great addition to any collection.
